Cuyahoga County • May 9, 2025
Good morning, Cuyahoga County. Long before he became Pope John Paul II, then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyla made a remarkable choice in 1969 — bypassing New York to make Cleveland his first American destination. The future pontiff was drawn to our city's vibrant Polish community, celebrating Mass at St. Stanislaus Church and leaving behind sacred gifts including a piece of bone from the church's namesake saint. The historical significance apparently escaped mayoral candidate Robert Kelly, who arrived during the service only to promptly leave for another empty campaign stop.
Meanwhile, healing takes to the streets as Rivers in the Desert launches mobile trauma units at Shaker Square tomorrow. These RVs, aptly named "The Healing Room," bring crucial support directly to grief-stricken communities. In more somber news, Thursday also marks the 37th Ohio Peace Officers Memorial ceremony, where fallen Cleveland Officer Jamieson Ritter and Euclid Officer Jacob Derbin will be honored alongside 840 other officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice since 1823.

⛪ Future Pope picked Cleveland over New York for his first US visit. In September 1969, then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyla (later Pope John Paul II) chose Cleveland as his initial American destination due to its large Polish community. He celebrated Mass at St. Stanislaus Church, thanking Polish-Americans for supporting the Polish Roman Catholic Church after World War II. The cardinal gifted the church a piece of bone from Saint Stanislaus and his bishop's mitre. Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Robert Kelly missed the historic visit due to scheduling confusion, arriving during Mass before leaving for another empty campaign stop.
🚐 Mobile trauma units bring healing to grief-stricken communities in Cleveland. Rivers in the Desert, a nonprofit helping those navigating unexpected deaths, is launching its RVs called "The Healing Room" on Thursday at Shaker Square. Co-founder Sharri Thomas started the organization after witnessing a double murder near her home in 2021. The mobile units provide free peer support, case managers, and social workers who meet people where tragedy strikes. Since the April shooting at Shaker Heights Public Library, The Healing Room has supported over 35 individuals, primarily youth, demonstrating its vital role in preventing retaliatory violence.
