🏙️ Bridge and build

Good morning, Clermont County. Downtown Cincinnati's skyline isn't the only thing evolving this season. In a creative pivot, developers are purchasing an existing hotel as a temporary measure while the much-anticipated convention headquarters hotel takes shape across from Duke Energy Convention Center. This strategic adaptation comes as downtown hotel traffic navigates significant challenges, highlighting how urban development often requires both vision and flexibility.

Meanwhile, infrastructure and legal matters are making waves across the region. The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge's 13-day closure for critical repairs has drivers rerouting their commutes, with officials promising the inconvenience will ensure years of reliable service. In the courthouse, a unanimous Ohio Supreme Court decision has ordered Hamilton County's clerk to restore eviction records he removed from public access—ending a dispute that unfortunately required taxpayer-funded legal counsel on both sides of an issue that judges had attempted to resolve without litigation.

🏨 Cincinnati's new convention hotel faces delays and a creative solution. The Cincinnati Center City Development Corp. and developer Portman Holdings plan to purchase an existing downtown hotel as a temporary measure. New renderings show the headquarters hotel will be built across Fifth Street from the Duke Energy Convention Center. The project aims to address declining downtown hotel traffic, which has seen significant drops in early 2025. This development joins other major projects reshaping Cincinnati's urban landscape, including a $150M Hyde Park Square project.

⚖️ Court orders clerk to restore eviction records he illegally removed. The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Hamilton County Clerk Pavan Parikh overstepped his authority by removing older eviction cases from public online access. Parikh had pulled records over three years old from the website in 2022 without consulting judges, claiming he wanted to prevent landlords from using the information against potential tenants. The judges attempted to resolve the dispute before litigation, but Parikh refused to comply with their order to restore the records. Both parties had to hire outside counsel at taxpayer expense for this unnecessary legal battle.

🌉 Cincinnati bridge shuts down for 13 days of critical repairs. The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge closed to vehicles for an extended period after additional repair needs were identified, though pedestrian access remains available. Drivers are advised to use the Brent Spence or Taylor Southgate bridges instead, with officials warning of expected delays and heavier traffic. The closure allows crews to install three modular joints as part of a larger repair project that began in April 2024. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says these improvements will ensure the bridge "remains in good working order for years to come."
