UC economics professor David Brasington discovered a surprising relationship when analyzing Ohio communities' police funding and housing data from 1995-2018. His research revealed that increasing police budgets raises housing prices by about 13% in low-income areas but decreases prices by at least 14% in high-income neighborhoods. Without splitting the data by income level, these opposite effects cancel each other out, explaining why previous studies found no connection. The findings suggest high-income areas may be overfunded for police services, while additional spending could benefit lower-income communities.
