🏛️ Historic handover

Clermont County • March 21, 2025

Good morning, Clermont County. A slice of local history is finding new purpose as the Thomin family donates a nearly 200-year-old log cabin and surrounding acreage to Liberty Township. The early 1800s structure—which has hosted countless weddings, graduation photos, and cherished memories—will now become a public park, preserving both architectural heritage and family legacy. Robert Thomin's years of careful restoration work will continue to benefit the community for generations to come.

Meanwhile, La Soupe is revolutionizing food rescue in Walnut Hills with their expanded 6,000-square-foot facility, transforming would-be waste into nutritious meals for hungry neighbors. Their "Rescue, Transform, Share" model has proven so successful it's spreading beyond Cincinnati's borders. In less appetizing news, city emergency services face critical challenges, with the police department 130 officers below capacity and the fire department awaiting much-needed equipment replacements amid nationwide recruitment hurdles.

🏡 Historic log cabin finds new life as Liberty Township park. Howard Thomin is donating nearly 5 acres containing a log cabin to become a public park named after his family. The cabin, believed to be built in the early 1800s, has long been used by locals for weddings, graduation photos, and special occasions. Under the donation agreement, the township must maintain the existing structures—including the log cabin, milk house, and barn—and install signage providing historical background. "This would make my father so proud," said Amy Thomin Gross, whose father Robert spent years restoring the cabin before his death in 2012.

🚒 Cincinnati's emergency services face critical staffing and equipment shortages. The police department is 130 officers below full capacity, while the fire department struggles with an aging fleet that's five engines short. Police Chief Theetge described aggressive recruitment efforts as agencies nationwide compete for a shrinking pool of interested candidates. Fire Chief McKinley noted the lengthy process to acquire new engines can take 3-4 years after purchase. Both departments also highlighted infrastructure challenges, including the outdated District 4 police station that can't properly support modern technology needs.
