đŸ—Ŗī¸ Community mic drop

Clermont County • March 18, 2025

Good morning, Clermont County. For the first time ever, Cincinnati residents are being handed the budgetary microphone, with city officials surveying locals about their financial priorities. The results? Unsurprisingly practical: safer streets, cleaner neighborhoods, affordable housing, pothole-free roads, and addressing homelessness topped the list. These community insights will shape the upcoming budget due for approval by June, marking a refreshing shift toward citizen-centered governance.

In a remarkable example of community innovation, La Soupe is tackling two problems simultaneously by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and redirecting it to hungry students in Athens. This partnership, which includes the Joe Burrow Foundation, addresses the staggering 38% of food that goes uneaten nationwide. Meanwhile, Cincinnati mourns Officer Marcellus Keyon Jones, a beloved 33-year-old school resource officer remembered for his "beaming smile" and integrity after his unexpected passing Saturday from a medical emergency.

📊 Cincinnati asks residents what they want in the city budget. For the first time, the city surveyed a representative sample of residents to guide budget priorities. Respondents identified public safety, neighborhood cleanliness, housing affordability, transportation infrastructure, and nuisance removal as top concerns. Within these categories, residents specifically prioritized alternative crisis response, trash cleanup, affordable housing development, pothole filling, and addressing homeless encampments. The City Council will use these insights as they prepare the budget, which must be approved by June.

🍲 Cincinnati nonprofit fights hunger by rescuing uneaten food for students. La Soupe is working with the Athens City School District in southeast Ohio to provide meals to students in need. Their efforts help address the staggering 38% of food (equivalent to 145 billion meals) that Feeding America estimates goes unsold or uneaten annually. The program represents a partnership that includes the Joe Burrow Foundation, focusing on food security in an area where many students face uncertainty about meals. By redistributing what would otherwise be wasted, the initiative tackles both hunger and food waste simultaneously.
