Good morning, Athens County. Justice arrived in full force this week as Robert Collins received a staggering 110-year prison sentence for his horrific crimes against children. The Glouster man's conviction on 21 counts brings a measure of closure to the nine brave victims who testified against their abuser, though the community continues processing the disturbing details revealed during the four-day trial.

In other developments, Ohio University finds itself at the center of controversy after removing professor Thomas Hayes from his film editing course following his detention by Israeli forces while aboard a humanitarian flotilla. Meanwhile, environmental advocates are sounding the alarm about Athens' diminishing tree canopy ahead of the October 20 Community Tree Talk. As experts prepare to discuss the vital ecological, economic, and social benefits trees provide, residents face important questions about urban forest conservation while the city considers downgrading its Shade Tree Commission.

βš–οΈ Child predator gets 110 years in prison for horrific crimes. Robert Collins, 63, of Glouster, Ohio received the maximum sentence for sexually assaulting multiple children after a jury found him guilty on 21 counts. The Athens County man groomed his victims by providing marijuana, alcohol, and vapes to create opportunities for assault. Nine victims testified during the four-day trial, which revealed Collins' systematic pattern of exploitation and intimidation. Prosecutor Keller Blackburn stated Collins "should spend the rest of his natural life in prison, never to victimize children again."

🚒 Ohio professor removed from course after being kidnapped by Israeli forces. Thomas Hayes, an associate professor at Ohio University, was taken off his film editing class immediately after returning from detention in Israel. Hayes was aboard a humanitarian flotilla providing aid to Gaza when Israeli forces seized the vessel in international waters. The university claims he violated policy by providing online lectures during his absence without proper approval. Hayes believes the decision, made while he was still imprisoned, was an attempt to limit his contact with students.
