🎭 Democracy on display

Good morning, Athens County. Artistic expression and civic engagement are taking center stage this week. At Ohio University's Kennedy Museum, faculty members are turning research into visual poetry through the "Art & Process" exhibit, where Melissa Haviland's layered imagery of historic cash crops and Basil Masri Zada's AI-enhanced reflections on Syria invite multiple visits—with museum board members promising new discoveries each time you return.

Meanwhile, democracy gets refreshingly interactive as the League of Women Voters prepares a musical chairs-style Candidate Roundtable for Trimble School Board and Glouster Mayor hopefuls. As candidates rotate between tables on September 30th, voters gain direct access to potential representatives. This community engagement stands in stark contrast to Ohio University's free speech climate, which recently earned a concerning D- grade from FIRE, with 42% of students reporting they self-censor at least monthly despite the administration's assurances about valuing expression.

🔊 Ohio University's free speech policies earn dismal D- grade. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression gave OU a 61.5% score in its annual university speech climate report, ranking it 64th out of 257 schools. According to the survey, 42% of students self-censor at least monthly, with concerns spanning comfort expressing ideas, openness, and administrative support. University spokesperson Dan Pittman insisted freedom of expression remains "the foundation of an Ohio University education," despite policies that restrict faculty speech. FIRE suggests OU could improve by revising campus speech codes and adopting institutional neutrality commitments.
