Athens County • September 25, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. Did you know our local deer population has skyrocketed by over 13% in just three years? Climate change is creating a perfect storm for deer reproduction as warmer temperatures extend mating cycles and reduce environmental stress. While these adaptable creatures thrive, their growing numbers pose serious challenges to our forest ecosystems and increasingly blur the boundaries between wildlife and urban spaces.
On a celebratory note, Ohio University is honoring two significant legacies this season. Five legendary figures—including the dominant 2004-2005 volleyball teams and wrestling star Cody Walters—will enter the Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame this October. Meanwhile, the university prepares to commemorate Roderick J. McDavis, its first Black president, with both a public lecture and the dedication of what will become the largest residence hall on campus when completed next fall.

🦌 Climate change fuels Athens deer population explosion with record growth. The Athens County deer population has increased by over 13.3% in three years, with warmer temperatures extending their mating cycles. Wildlife experts note deer are now reproducing more frequently due to reduced environmental stress from higher temperatures and recent droughts. This overabundance threatens local ecosystems as deer overbrowsing damages forest regeneration, reducing plant diversity and affecting bird habitats. Additionally, Athens deer are becoming increasingly comfortable around humans, further amplifying their presence in urban areas.
🏆 Ohio Athletics unveils five legendary inductees for Hall of Fame 2025. Wrestling star Cody Walters joins as a three-time MAC Champion and two-time NCAA All-American. Baseball standout Rudy Rott enters after earning consecutive MAC Player of the Year honors, while track and cross country champion Carime Reinhart rounds out the class with multiple MAC titles. The inductees will be recognized during the October 18 homecoming football game against Northern Illinois.
