Athens County • August 19, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. In a world where emergency preparedness has become increasingly vital, the Ohio University Police Department is stepping up with a potentially life-saving opportunity this fall. Their free active aggressor training sessions in September and October offer community members practical strategies for navigating crisis situations—no registration required, just show up and learn skills we all hope never to use.
Meanwhile, the ripple effects of change continue across the region. A routine traffic stop in The Plains led to a significant drug bust when deputies discovered narcotics, crack cocaine, and pills in Gregory Spears' vehicle—with more substances later found hidden in his sock at the jail. On campus, Ohio University's Board of Trustees has made the difficult decision to eliminate 12 academic programs amid enrollment challenges, while another 33 programs face amendments as the institution navigates the requirements of Ohio's Higher Education Act.

🛡️ OUPD offers free training to counter active aggressors this fall. The Ohio University Police Department will host public safety sessions in September and October at Baker University Center. These hour-long trainings aim to prepare participants for potential active aggressor situations through education and discussion. Sessions will be held on September 9, October 9, and October 22, with no registration required. Interested community members need only attend one session to learn these potentially life-saving strategies.
🚨 Traffic stop leads to drug bust for Ohio man with warrants. Gregory Spears, 42, was arrested Wednesday in The Plains after a K-9 detected narcotics in his vehicle. Deputies discovered suspected narcotics, crack cocaine, dozens of pills, and drug paraphernalia during the search. Spears was already wanted for driving with a suspended license and had active warrants for failure to appear and child support issues. While at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail, staff found additional suspected narcotics hidden in his sock, adding illegal conveyance charges to his growing list of offenses.
📚 Ohio University slashes 12 programs amid enrollment challenges. The university's Board of Trustees approved eliminating three associate, six bachelor's, and three master's degrees that failed to meet minimum graduation requirements. These cuts stem from Ohio's Higher Education Act, which requires institutions to eliminate programs conferring fewer than five degrees annually over three years. Additionally, 33 other programs will undergo amendments, while 64 programs received no recommended action. The phase-out begins gradually, with final student admissions ranging from 2017 to 2024.
