Athens County • July 30, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. In the quest to champion disability rights, Athens is searching for its next local hero. The 11th annual Athena Award nominations are now open through September 2, seeking individuals whose advocacy, volunteerism, or innovative programs have improved life for people with disabilities. The award ceremony on November 5 will celebrate these community champions, joining ten previous recipients who've made extraordinary contributions to this vital cause.
Meanwhile, two initiatives are nurturing Athens' next generation of experts. Ohio University's new Diabetes Scholars Program is preparing future scientific leaders with stipends and hands-on research opportunities starting Fall 2025. And in high school classrooms across Central Ohio, the OHIO Medical Academy is bringing primary care medicine to life through immersive simulations in maternal-fetal care, adult medicine, and sports medicine—inspiring tomorrow's healthcare professionals while highlighting primary care's essential role.

Starting Fall 2025, the program will select six students—three undergraduate and three graduate—providing stipends of $2,500 and $3,000 respectively over three years. 👩⚕️ High school students discover primary care's hidden wonders in Ohio. The OHIO Medical Academy's new initiative "Primary Care – The Heart of Healthcare" brings hands-on medical simulations directly to Central Ohio classrooms. Led by medical students Catherine Maas, Bailey Hall, and Anna Sampson, the program reached 189 high schoolers this year, offering immersive experiences in maternal-fetal care, adult medicine, and sports medicine. Students practiced real clinical skills like ultrasound imaging, taking vital signs, and newborn assessments under guidance from resident physicians. Funded by a $3,000 grant from the Dublin Community Foundation, this interprofessional collaboration aims to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals while highlighting primary care's essential role.
