Good morning, Athens County. In an industry where the question "Can I speak to a male mechanic?" still echoes through service bays, Katie Steyer is turning wrenches and changing perceptions at Athens Tool Company. The former nurse now maintains heavy machinery with skill that commands respect from both colleagues and the growing number of customers who specifically request her expertise. Her 9-year-old daughter's proud declarations about mom's mechanical prowess suggest the next generation might view such career paths quite differently.

Meanwhile, contrasting narratives unfold across our community. The Athens County Court of Common Pleas calendar reveals a sobering reality of drug and weapons charges filling the docket, while area classrooms buzz with innovation through Ohio University's decade-long STEM partnership with AEP Ohio. The collaboration has reached 800 students this year alone, taking education beyond traditional classroom walls to creeks and forests where hands-on learning thrives—particularly benefiting students who struggle with conventional teaching methods.

🔧 Female mechanic smashes stereotypes in male-dominated field. Katie Steyer, the only woman mechanic at Athens Tool Company, faces customers who often ask for "a man" instead. Despite this stigma, she thrives maintaining heavy equipment like skid steers and bulldozers after switching careers from nursing. Her male colleagues support her growth, and she's proving women belong in the industry. "Women shouldn't be intimidated," says Steyer, whose 9-year-old daughter now proudly tells friends her mom moves heavy machinery for a living.
