Good morning, Athens County. Small-town policing takes on a colorful dimension in this week's sheriff's report, where the line between emergency and comedy often blurs. From a man who accidentally shot himself on a bike path to concerns about mailbox placement and missing trash cans, our local deputies have seen it all. These quirky incidents paint a vivid portrait of rural life where even the smallest happenings become part of our community's ongoing story.

Meanwhile, a half-century tradition continues to thrive at the Athens Farmers Market, where Wednesday and Saturday mornings transform the Community Center parking lot into a vibrant hub of local commerce. Since 1972, this gathering has connected residents with the region's agricultural bounty – from Ed Perkins' decades of farming wisdom to Kari Pennington's artisanal sourdough creations. It's a reminder that some of life's simplest pleasures – fresh food and community connection – remain our most enduring ones.

🌾 Athens Farmers Market brings farm-fresh goodness to the heart of town. Nestled in the Athens Community Center parking lot, the market has been connecting locals with regional farmers since 1972. Every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to noon, vendors within 150 miles offer freshly harvested produce and artisan goods like sourdough bread, maple syrup, and homemade fudge. Long-time vendor Ed Perkins of Sassafrass Farm has "grown with the farmers market" since the 1970s, while newer vendors like Kari Pennington bring fresh enthusiasm with her popular sourdough products. Market manager Tanya Hire emphasizes the community benefits: "You're supporting 50 to 60 individual small businesses" while getting the freshest possible food.
