Athens County • May 8, 2025
Good morning, Athens County. In a primary election that barely drew 10% of registered voters to the polls, Athens residents have spoken on key financial matters, rejecting a proposed income tax increase that would have bumped rates from 1.95% to 2.25%. The low turnout didn't stop Democratic candidates from securing nominations in several city council races, while Nelsonville voters made their own statement by narrowly rejecting a charter amendment that would have repealed Issue 23.
Meanwhile, the halls of WOUB are buzzing with well-deserved pride as staff and students collected an impressive haul at the Press Club of Cleveland's All-Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards. Report for America member Theo Peck-Suzuki is ending his three-year tenure on a high note with four audio storytelling awards, while five talented WOUB students proved the future of local journalism remains in capable hands. The celebration continues at the awards ceremony in Cleveland on June 6.

The Golden Eagles soared over Alexander 7-2 on Tuesday, with Belpre's bats proving too much for the struggling Spartans. The win improves Belpre to 5-11 while Alexander drops to 2-9, but these teams won't have to wait long for a rematch—they'll face off again Wednesday in what's quickly becoming baseball's newest awkward home-and-home series.
