🏺 Ancient skills revival

Athens County • March 14, 2025

Good morning, Athens County. Long before rifles and bows, our ancestors relied on a remarkable hunting tool that's making a comeback at the Southeast Ohio History Center. The atlatl—an ancient spear-throwing device that dramatically increased hunting power and accuracy—takes center stage at the upcoming Lyceum Luncheon on March 20. This prehistoric technology demonstration offers a fascinating glimpse into our region's distant past, while providing another enriching educational opportunity through the Center's monthly series.

While some Ohio University students may be dreaming of sandy beaches this spring break, others are discovering more meaningful alternatives. From affordable $50 service programs in Appalachia to immersive study abroad experiences in Northern Ireland and Rome, OU's break options extend far beyond traditional vacations. Meanwhile, academic excellence continues to flourish locally, with over 120 students from communities like Ironton and Proctorville earning spots on OU's prestigious Dean's List for Fall 2024.

🏹 Ancient hunting tool takes center stage at Ohio History Center. The Southeast Ohio History Center's Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series will feature "The Atlatl: The World's Ancient Hunting Tool" on March 20. Steve Barnett and Ray Strischek, members of the Ohio Atlatl Association, will explain how this prehistoric spear-throwing device gave early hunters greater power, range, and accuracy compared to hand-thrown spears. The brown bag luncheon begins at noon at the History Center in Athens. This monthly educational series offers the community opportunities to learn about the rich local history of the region.

🌄 Spring break at OU offers more than just beaches and tans. Students can explore affordable service programs in Appalachia or study abroad in destinations like Northern Ireland and Rome. The Alternate Spring Break program costs just $50 and allows students to make a difference in local communities. Meanwhile, study abroad options provide immersive historical experiences, with one student describing conversations with people who lived through "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland.
