🍀 Court street shenanigans

Athens County • March 12, 2025

Good morning, Athens County. March 15th might be the Ides of March elsewhere, but in Athens, it's all about green beer flowing freely on Court Street. Ohio University's beloved pre-spring break tradition has seniors like Josh Lundgren starting celebrations at 11 a.m. with plans to continue until closing time—with just brief pauses for life's minor inconveniences like quizzes and rugby practice. Local bars are embracing the shamrock spirit with $2 Leprechaun Shots and emerald-tinted drafts that transform our college town into a St. Patrick's Day preview.

For those seeking heartier fare this weekend, American Legion Post 229 is serving up the ultimate comfort breakfast. From 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, you can enjoy sausage gravy, biscuits, and home fries—with flexible dining options including eat-in, carry-out, or local delivery for those who prefer their weekend comfort food without leaving home. Meanwhile, significant changes are underway at Ohio's universities as institutions respond to legislative pressures regarding diversity programs.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

📚 Ohio universities rush to dismantle DEI programs amid legislative pressure. Senate Bill 1, which would ban diversity initiatives in recruitment, training, and scholarships, has already prompted preemptive actions at schools like Ohio State University, which eliminated 16 staff positions. At Ohio University, events like the Black Alumni Reunion have been put on hold despite the bill not yet passing. The letter's author argues that waiting for official passage is naive, urging students to develop community-led solutions and support identity-inclusive organizations that will lose university backing. "We are our student experience," writes sophomore Nyla Gilbert, calling for immediate action rather than delayed planning.
