πŸ—³ Election thrillers

Athens County • January 20, 2025

Good morning, Athens County. Talk about a plot twist worthy of a political thriller - Nelsonville finds itself in an election drama that would make "House of Cards" writers envious. With missing ward boundaries, potential six-figure special elections, and the prospect of unpaid council members, our neighbors to the north are racing against time to prevent their local democracy from turning into a costly cliffhanger.

Meanwhile, the excitement isn't limited to City Hall. The Athens Bulldogs just wrote another chapter in their legendary rivalry with Alexander, turning a pre-game technical foul into a statement victory. And while basketballs were soaring through hoops, Ohio University's ambitions reached even higher - with new solar arrays, a $3.5 million practice facility for the Marching 110, and a whopping $70 million grant transforming campus faster than you can say "go Bobcats."

β˜•οΈ What's Brewing Locally

πŸ—³οΈ Nelsonville faces costly chaos over missing ward boundaries for election. The Ohio city has less than three weeks to establish voting districts for its upcoming City Council election, or only three of seven seats can appear on the May ballot. A recent voter initiative restored the city's old form of government with ward representatives, but the current charter gives officials no authority to draw the needed ward boundaries. The situation could force a special election costing the city six figures, while another legal snag means newly elected officials might have to work without pay. The city's Board of Elections director suggested using existing voting precincts as temporary wards to avoid these complications.
