Athens County • December 24, 2024

Good morning, Athens County. In the digital age, even a single misplaced letter can cost you $722,000 - as our city officials recently discovered when cyber criminals pulled off an elaborate email scheme worthy of a Hollywood heist movie. It's a sobering reminder that sometimes the biggest threats aren't the ones breaking down doors, but the ones slipping through our inboxes.

On a more optimistic note, while GoBus prepares for its 2025 route transformation, Ohio University researchers are making headlines with a potential breakthrough in preventing osteoarthritis. Who knew that limiting growth hormone reception could be the key to keeping our joints jumping well into our golden years? It's just another example of how our local minds are helping solve global problems.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🚌 Ohio's GoBus overhauls routes and schedules for major 2025 transformation. Starting January 2, the transit system will implement significant changes to its Cleveland, Parkersburg, and Wooster-Columbus routes, while converting the Columbus Greyhound station to a transfer-only stop. To accommodate passengers affected by the Greyhound changes, a new Columbus stop will open at 306 E Mound St, serving routes between Van Wert and Wooster. The updates aim to improve schedule reliability and traffic flow across Ohio's transportation network, with all changes clearly marked in yellow on updated schedules. Passengers are advised to arrive 15 minutes early and check ridegobus.com for the latest information.

🦿 Scientists discover potential breakthrough in preventing osteoarthritis. Researchers at Ohio University found that limiting growth hormone reception could significantly reduce the development of this debilitating joint condition, which affects over 80% of adults above age 55. The groundbreaking study, published in GeroScience, demonstrated improved joint health in mice when growth hormone was inhibited. An existing FDA-approved drug called SOMAVERT, currently used to treat a rare growth condition, might be repurposed for osteoarthritis prevention. While the findings are promising, the research team emphasizes that clinical trials and further studies will be necessary before this treatment becomes available to patients.

💰 Cyber criminals fool Ohio city with a single misplaced letter. The city of Athens, Ohio is suing unknown scammers who stole nearly $722,000 through a sophisticated email fraud scheme. The criminals created a fake domain name mimicking Pepper Construction's legitimate website, simply transposing two letters in "construction" to trick officials. City officials unknowingly transferred the funds after receiving what appeared to be a valid invoice for work on a fire station and Armory building. The city has now filed a lawsuit seeking to freeze the fraudulent bank account while investigators attempt to trace the stolen money.
