A murder witness recanted โ so why is he still locked up? ๐
โ
Good morning, Cuyahoga County. Justice moves slowly โ sometimes agonizingly so. A News 5 investigation is finally giving murder convict Roberto Wynn his day in court after the key witness against him recanted her testimony back in 2022. Meanwhile, the county itself is writing a $400,000 check to settle a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former audit director. On the national front, the U.S. Men's National Team bowed out of the World Cup with a tough 4-1 loss to Belgium, ending their quarterfinal hopes for another cycle.
On a lighter note, there's still plenty of summer magic to chase. The Lion King hits the stage tonight, BorderLight Theatre Festival opens tomorrow, and Cleveland Games Culture Fest rounds out the week. After News 5 investigation, Cuyahoga judge allows innocence claimant to seek new trial
โ๏ธ A news investigation just gave a murder convict his long-awaited day in court. Roberto Wynn, convicted of a 2008 Cleveland shooting, has been granted the opportunity to file for a new trial after the key witness against him recanted her testimony in 2022. A News 5 investigation aired the same day Judge Jeffrey Saffold set a July 13 deadline for Wynn's motion, with prosecutors given 45 days to respond. Experts say Wynn's two-year legal limbo reflects a systemic flaw in post-conviction proceedings, where even meritorious innocence cases can stall indefinitely. A proposed Ohio law that would require hearings for credible new evidence has itself languished without a single committee hearing since March 2025. Read more
