Good morning, Athens County. Nelsonville has two city councils right now — and no, that's not a typo. After 70% of voters backed a government switch last November, the existing council declared the whole thing null and void, and now the Ohio Supreme Court is left holding the gavel. It's the kind of civic standoff that sounds like a law school hypothetical, except it's very much real and very much unresolved. On a cheerier note, the Athens Bulldogs are rolling into tournament season on a five-game unbeaten streak, while Alexander freshman Jovi Regan just rewrote her school's assist record in her very first year. Busy week ahead too — music classes, a charity pancake breakfast, and a makers market are all on deck. Fresh listings are inside as well. ☕️ What's Brewing Locally Nelsonville charter council remains legitimate ⚖️ Nelsonville has two city councils — and neither will budge. After voters approved switching to a statutory government in November 2024 with 70% of the vote, the existing charter council passed Ordinance 54-25 on Aug. 11, 2025, declaring the ballot measure null and void, citing a missing transition plan that could cost the city $2–3 million. The Ohio Supreme Court allowed elections to the new statutory council to proceed anyway, leaving the small city with two competing governing bodies. A lawsuit before the Ohio Supreme Court will ultimately decide whether the charter council had the authority to override the voters' decision. The Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to five games Tuesday, with goals from Adrian Oluoch, Noah Stroh, and AJ Harris securing a clean sheet against Unioto. The match carried extra meaning as Athens honored graduate Morgan Tritipo, a cancer victim, with special jerseys, raffles, and donations benefiting the Morgan's Girls Foundation. Despite the comfortable victory, coach John Kwakye treated it as a tune-up, with the two teams likely to meet again in the Division III Southeast District semifinals. Athens opens tournament play on Oct. 22, eyeing a deep postseason run. Read more Spartans shut out Cavaliers as Regan records new single-season assist record ⚽ A freshman just rewrote her school's record books in year one. Alexander's Jovi Regan set a new single-season assists record with her 15th of the year, powering the Spartans to a 4-0 senior night shutout over Chillicothe. Eliza Blaney led the scoring with two goals, while the team's dominant second half erased a sluggish first 40 minutes. The win closes out Alexander's regular season at 11-5-1, with the No. 4-seeded Spartans set to host No. 13 Rock Hill in a first-round tournament matchup on Oct. 21.
