Ohio's wildest political drama just got weirder ๐
โ
Good morning, Athens County. Two governments, one small city โ Nelsonville's political standoff sounds like the plot of a quirky indie film, but it's very much real life. Since January 1st, two rival governments have been simultaneously claiming authority over the city, and the Ohio Supreme Court just sent a related case back to a lower court without fully resolving it. Stay tuned on that one. Meanwhile, the national economy is sending mixed signals โ a weak September jobs report has markets rethinking another rate hike, even as GDP growth holds surprisingly steady.
On a muddier and more satisfying note, Trimble's Tomcats pulled off a homecoming upset over Belpre, while the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes stayed perfect at 7-0 with a dominant shutout. Fresh real estate listings are inside if you're in the market.

Ohio Supreme Court revives a case that could determine the fate of Nelsonville's rival governments
โ๏ธ Nelsonville, Ohio has two rival governments โ and no resolution yet. The Ohio Supreme Court revived a case on Oct. 2 that could finally determine which government is legitimate in the small Athens County city. The unusual standoff began when voters approved a 2024 ballot initiative to scrap the city's charter government and return to a statutory model, but the City Council then voted to repeal that initiative โ claiming authority under the very charter being abolished. The result: two governments, each claiming legitimacy, have been operating simultaneously since Jan. 1, 2026. The Supreme Court's latest move sends a related case back to a lower court, though the issue could ultimately land before the high court again regardless. Read more
