88Β° inside their homes β plus a $2K iPhone & weekend plans π₯
β
Good morning, Athens County. Inside Beasley Mill's senior apartments, thermometers have been hitting 88 degrees β and that's not a heat index, that's the actual air temperature where people live. The HVAC failure that knocked out both heat and cooling has left elderly residents sweating through weeks of summer with little more than box fans to show for it. Meanwhile, Athens County is preparing to mark 9/11's 25th anniversary with a courthouse bell ringing at 8:46 a.m., and Nelsonville is doing the same with a Public Square ceremony worth attending.
On the national side, Apple just unveiled a foldable iPhone with a $1,999 price tag β because apparently that's where we are now. Locally, the weekend ahead brings an herbal medicine talk, the Cowbell Ball Art Auction, and Bobcats football. Fresh real estate listings are inside too.

Beasley Mill seniors go weeks without hot water, air conditioning
π‘οΈ Elderly tenants swelter without AC or hot water for weeks. Seniors at Beasley Mill, an income-assisted housing complex in Athens, Ohio, have endured temperatures reaching 90 degrees inside their apartments after an HVAC system failure on Aug. 23 knocked out both the boiler and chiller. Management says repairs could stretch until mid-September, offering only box fans and intermittent warm water in the meantime. Resident Kenneth MacKillop, 63, reported his apartment hit 88 degrees on Sept. 4, with units on upper floors even hotter. Fairfield Homes, which owns the complex, has declined to provide temporary housing, citing continued access to cold water. Read more

The event, planned for Sept. 11, will include a bell ringing at 8:46 a.m. β the moment American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower β along with prayers and remarks from a veterans court judge. In separate business, the county treasurer reported a 30.9% jump in real-estate delinquent collections and a striking 125% increase in mobile home delinquent tax recovery. Commissioners also approved pursuing legal action against a Hockingport property owner who built a large accessory structure without required floodplain permits or engineering documentation.
